Surface Ground is a study of the landscape around us in Pembrokeshire, and of the ways material, weather, use and time become visible at its surface. It is a mini guide book to our work and thinking at  Tŷ Clai and how the Pembrokeshire landscape has informed our work.

Through photography and writing, the publication moves between landform, material, depth and ground. It looks at exposed strata, harbour walls, worn edges, mineral colour and the traces left by making and inhabitation. These observations sit alongside a wider ceramic practice shaped by the same questions of material, process and place.

About

Luke Royffe and Emma Flynn are architects, designers and makers based between Pembrokeshire and London. Their work has long moved between architecture and landscape, with a particular interest in material, environmental change, inhabitation and the relationship between the natural and the constructed.

At the Bartlett, UCL, their postgraduate architectural research explored infrastructural, environmental and engineered landscapes. Those interests have continued through their architectural practice and writing.

Together they founded Royffe Flynn, a design and research practice working across architecture, landscape, regeneration and development. They later established Tŷ Clai in Fishguard, a house and pottery conceived as an extension of that wider practice. At Tŷ Clai, these interests are explored at another scale, through clay, objects, interiors, making and the landscape of west Wales.
