The Surface Vase brings together our longstanding interest in geology and industrial landscapes with the influence of 1960s studio pottery. Its form draws on extracted core samples, while the top and base recall eroded metalwork, flanged pipes and rivets. The edges suggest flakes of rusted metal or fractured slate, echoing the softer shapes of flowers and petals.

The vase is part of our Surface Ground collection; a study of the landscape around us in Pembrokeshire, and of the ways material, weather, use and time become visible at its surface.

This vase is handmade in Abergwaun, Wales, using locally sourced stoneware clay, blended with grog to create a unique speckled finish on every piece. Each vase is made by hand, embracing slight variances and a bit of wonkiness. We believe that these subtle differences make each piece one-of-a-kind, with a character that you can feel in your hands.
