Explore the forms and textures of Welsh vernacular architecture in a design-led ceramics workshop at Tŷ Clai. Using stoneware clay, participants will learn hand-building and slab-building techniques to create a lantern inspired by Welsh cottages and landscapes.
This day workshop provides an introduction to clay processes, guiding participants through shaping, cutting, and joining techniques to craft an architectural form. The session includes exploration of apertures, textures, and surface details, connecting materiality with place.
Structure
Overview: Clay preparation, glazing, and firing
Context: Introduction to Welsh vernacular typologies using local and historical references
Tools & Techniques: Overview of pottery tools and hand-building methods
Design: Planning and sketching building form
Making: Form creation using hand-building and extruding techniques
Finishing: Adding texture, detail, and refining edges and surfaces
Details
4 hour group session for up to 9 participants
The session runs from 11AM-4PM to include a 1 hour lunch break
Bring a packed lunch to enjoy at Tŷ Clai or pop out to one of Fishguard's local cafes. Includes tea/coffee and cake, enjoyed in the Tŷ Clai garden or workshop.
Create one Welsh cottage or similar building, bisque fired, glazed and fired again ready for collection (or postage) in 3-4 weeks.
Includes all materials, tools, and premium stoneware clay and glazes.

T&Cs:
For slab building workshops all clay will be prepped and dried for ease of working 4 days before the event. If for unforeseen circumstances you need to reschedule, Tŷ Clai is happy to reschedule the workshop provided a minimum of 5 days notice is given. Bookings are non-refundable.
